Afghanistan's Foreign Reserves


On February 11, 2022, U.S. President Joe Biden announced his administration was placing half of Afghanistan's seven billion dollars in frozen assets into a U.S. account that may eventually pay the Taliban's legal debt to the American victims of 9/11.


Writing in Foreign Policy magazine, Azimuth Advisor Charli Carpenter says the Biden administration should instead put that money in a trust account for the Afghan people. "The reserves belong to the Afghan people, not the U.S or the Taliban," Carpenter writes.
