Azimuth Advisor Warned Apple about China
Updated: Nov 11, 2021

The New York Times profiled Azimuth Social Research advisor Doug Guthrie today, focusing on his work with Apple and other major corporations in China. Guthrie had warned the company about China's growing authoritarianism and shared his fears for the integrity of Apple's data with the company's senior leaders. His concerns did not receive sufficient attention, he says.
Guthrie, who has been publishing serious academic work on China since the early 1990s, has long been seen as a proponent of Western investment in the country. According to the Times, "Mr. Guthrie and many executives, politicians and academics had bet that Western investment in China would lead the country to liberalize. It is now clear that they miscalculated. 'We were wrong,' said Mr. Guthrie, who left Apple in 2019."
